Beware of scammers targeting Pinterest

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Pinterest has become one of the hottest social networking sites around. It's a place to swap ideas on everything from recipes to the latest trends in clothing just by pinning the ideas you like to a virtual pinboard.

But like anything that draws crowds, Pinterest has drawn scammers, too. The I-Team's Dana Fowle has some tips on things you should avoid when you're pinning on Pinterest.

Anti-virus software company McAfee says they've seen ready-made software kits online that scammers buy to encourage you to pin their bogus sites.  Some sites offer free gifts or other freebies, but cyber security expert Mark Puckett says that's the number one draw for scammers.  Puckett tells FOX 5 that you should be suspicious of anything that asks you to do something in exchange for a free gift card, or some other reward.

Also, if you're asked to pin something to "unlock" a page, don't.  Be wary of anyone who asks you to view a post before pinning it, or anything that says something along the lines of "shocking video you must see."
