Former President Bill Clinton said Mitt Romney would be "calamitous for our country and the world" Monday evening at a private fundraiser in New York City with President Barack Obama.
Standing with the president in the living room of an elegant Upper East Side apartment, Clinton said Obama has the "right economic policy and the right political approach," while he said the Republican Party's "economics are wrong-headed and their politics are worse."
The fundraiser -- the first of three that Obama and Clinton are scheduled to attend Monday evening -- was at the home of Marc Lasry, the billionaire founder of the hedge fund Avenue Capital Group.
According to the pool report, 40 to 50 people pressed into a small living room to listen to the presidents, with some sitting on a table.
The attendees paid $40,000 apiece for tickets to the fundraiser, a campaign official told The Wall Street Journal.
Clinton has been a key surrogate for Obama's re-election campaign, although he raised eyebrows last week with some off-message comments about Romney's business record.
Clinton called Romney's business career "sterling" in a television interview and said the Republican candidate "crosses the qualification threshold" to be president. The complimentary remarks undercut the Obama campaign's argument that Romney's private equity career does not qualify him to be commander-in-chief.
After the private event, Clinton and Obama are set to address about 500 people at the Waldorf Astoria, where Jon Bon Jovi will entertain the crowd. FOX News Channel reported that Bon Jovi traveled to New York aboard Air Force One with the president.
The third and final fundraiser of the evening is a star-studded event before about 1,700 people at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Neil Patrick Harris, James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury will be among the performers there.
According to The Journal, tickets to the Waldorf Astoria event started at $2,500 per person, while the New Amsterdam Theatre fundraiser cost at least $250 per person.
Proceeds from Monday's events will go to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee of Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.
