MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and county Health Department Director Steven Gold were going store to store on Tuesday looking for K2, Spice, or any other designer drugs still for sale.

On Monday, Macomb County banned the sale of these products, calling them an imminent danger to public health.

They did confiscate about $550 worth of synthetic drugs from a Marathon gas station on Gratiot at 16 Mile.  It had already been removed from the shelf and was behind the counter marked not for sale.

"I think what you're seeing is a lot of people from the community that are buying gas, that are buying stuff at these retail outlets are saying, hey, we don't appreciate you selling this.  There's a big hype about it.  It's not good for the kids.  It's not good for the community," said Hackel.

Not good at all, and that's the reason Sam Najor says he doesn't sell it at his store in Saint Clair Shores.

"We see a lot of kids that they get hurt by it, so it shouldn't be around."

It seems every community is taking action.  Tuesday we heard from Livonia and Port Huron, as well as Wayne County where county Executive Robert Ficano has signed an order banning synthetic drugs.

The Associated Food and Petroleum Dealers Association is also working with its 3,000 stores and gas stations to get it off the shelves.

"We don't see too many big distributors selling the stuff.  You see the small jobbers selling it out of the back of their trunks and out of their cars, so it's been really hard to go after one distributor and say stop selling it," said Auday Arabo.

He also says it's hard to know who's even manufacturing this stuff.

"There [are] so many different labels of this garbage out there and most of it says made in China, but that's all we know.  We don't know what's in it.  We don't know what's causing the harm.  We just know it shouldn't be sold."

Oakland County residents are encouraged to boycott any businesses selling synthetic drugs.  A spokesman with the county executive says bans in other counties are not enforceable in a court of law, but with so many citizens taking action, so far the court of public opinion seems to be all that matters.

"The outcry from the public, I don't know that I've ever seen anything like this over a product, I mean it's been absolutely incredible no matter where you're at," Hackel said.
