Scott Walker first ever governor to survive recall election

MILWAUKEE (KMSP) -

Wisconsin voters have chosen to keep Gov. Scott Walker in office. He becomes the first governor in U.S. history to survive a recall election.

Just a half hour after polls closed, FOX News and the Associated Press both called it for Gov. Walker.

The crowd at his headquarters went absolutely crazy, but the governor struck a conciliatory tone in his victory address.

"Bringing our state together will take time," Walker said. "Next week I'm going to bring both sides of the Legislature together for a barbecue -- some brats and maybe some good Wisconsin beer as well."

"The state remains divided," said Walker's challenger, Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. "It's my hope lively debates, healthy in democracy, victorious tonight can do what is right for Wisconsin families."

"This whole recall election shouldn't have happened," Walker supporter Ben Youth said. "It was completely uncalled for and hopefully they change how they can do one of these recalls. Because he did nothing wrong."

Voter turnout was extremely strong throughout the state, in the 60 to 65 percent range.

But it came down in many respects to Barrett not doing as well as he needed to in the liberal strongholds of Madison and Milwaukee. Walker also did extremely well in Waukesha County.
