Orono police offer reward in fishy squad car vandalism

Posted: Updated:
ORONO, Minn. (KMSP) -

It's the time of year for high school graduations -- and senior pranks, but police in Orono say one person went too far after squad cars were vandalized and pelted with large fish.

Since graduation took place on Wednesday night, investigators are wondering if any recent grads or high school students were involved, but they don't know for sure. What they do know is that they have one squad car with a broken window and obscene words spray painted on the sides -- along with four big carp.

The culprit was caught on camera when they struck the back lot of the Orono Police Department at 1:30 a.m.

"Began to just throw the fish at the cars," recalled Sgt. Tony Wittke. "They landed on the sidewalk and on top of one of the cars."

In the process, the fish broke the back window of the department's newest squad.

"Still a brand new car, with about 200 miles on it," Wittke told FOX 9 News.

When the odd call went out to inform officers that someone had smashed out a squad window with a fish, other departments came to help form a perimeter and look for a fired-up fisherman in nearby cars.

The carp were all about 32 inches long, and all had been shot with a bow and arrow.

Though it may smell like a prank, it really is a criminal vandalism -- especially given the curse words painted on the squad. That's why police are offering a cash reward for an arrest.
