Water safety specialist talks response, preparation
A recent rash of drowning deaths show that knowing how to react can help save a life, and FOX 9 News spoke with Tim Smalley, a boat and water safety specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, about common risks and response tips.
In the last four days, three people have drowned -- and one person is missing after falling off a boat, but it's expected that he too is dead. On Monday, a 16-year-old girl died at a hospital after spending about 40 minutes under water on Sunday.
This sudden increase in water emergencies has many people asking if the high water is to blame or if this is something responders see every year as summer approaches.
Smalley shared a few steps people should to take to make sure their trip to the lake is a safe one -- and he also talked about the biggest mistake people make.
