Pet insurance: Buy it, or skip it?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

This year, Americans will spend about $14 billion on veterinary care for their pets.  But if you're spending that much money, should you buy pet insurance?

FOX 5 I-Team reporter Dana Fowle tackled that question, and she found that it depends on what kind of pet owner you are.  Do you just cover the basics for your pet, like annual vaccinations?  Or, would you pay for your dog to have chemotherapy or radiation if it had cancer?

Historically, pet insurance didn't offer much, but now there are more choices out there. Still, Fowle says you really have to do your homework.

The ASPCA says vet bills over a lifetime for a dog can average out to about $800 a year. Monthly pet insurance runs from $10 to about $50, and often there are deductibles.  Obviously, the more you pay the more you get, but you should know that those average yearly wellness checks aren't always covered.

An executive with Atlanta-based pet insurance company ProtectYourBubble.com told Fowle pet insurance isn't for everybody, but it is good for some.

Consumer Reports does not recommend dog insurance.  The argument is that you could put aside savings for emergencies.  But if you are that person who knows you'll go to great lengths to save the life of your dog,  then it might just be for you.  Either way, you should know if the plan you're getting covers older dogs, or if there are limitations on particular breeds.  You should also ask about pre-existing conditions, and whether or not there are discounts for multiple animals.
