For the 2nd year Taylor and her mom, Jennifer, are volunteering at their Oak Cliff library, the Hampton-Illinois branch. Mom and daughter are there every day enrolling children in the Mayor's Summer Reading Program.
When I covered their story they had signed up 2,180 kids ... more than any other Dallas public library. How do they do it? The personal touch.
The 15 year old and her mom put their desk front and center and then blinged it out with homemade signs, glitter and flowers. They have the time to chat with kids about books and the importance of reading. Jennifer is a teacher and she knows that kids need to keep their reading skills sharp in the summer so they'll be ready for another school year.
