Cigarette consumption down, tobacco product purchases up

Posted: Updated:

Cigarette consumption has gone down in the U.S., but purchases of other tobacco products have gone up.

Overall consumption of smoked tobacco products has dropped more than 27 percent since 2000, but consumption of non-cigarette smoked tobacco products, like pipes and cigars, increased by 123 percent.

Although no reason was given for the disparity in numbers, the report by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention suggested tax loopholes may be a cause.

The federal tax on pipe tobacco is lower than the one on cigarettes.

You can view the entire report in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
