Impatient passenger hijacks DART van

DALLAS -

A Dallas Area Rapid Transit passenger was arrested Thursday afternoon for allegedly stealing a paratransit van.

DART said the 54-year-old Gail Humprey was upset that the driver would not take her to her destination before making other stops.

Witnesses told FOX 4 she was irate and even called DART police and 911 to complain.

They said when the driver stopped and got out of the vehicle to talk to his supervisor about what was happening, the woman got out of her wheelchair and got behind the wheel.

She drove erratically for about 20 minutes, running over curbs and going through stop signs before getting onto Highway 75, the witnesses said.

Police finally pulled her over on the highway near N. Hall Street. At the time she was on the phone with DART customer service still complaining about not being dropped off.

Humprey was taken into custody for kidnapping and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Her son said she is bi-polar and was on her way to a doctor's appointment to get more medicine at the time of the incident.
