Clarice Tinsley's Hometown Heroes this week are the North Texans who made this first day of school special for thousands of children.
This is the second year Kroger made it possible for its customers to help disadvantaged students in Arlington, Dallas and Fort Worth.
Shoppers could spend $7 to donate a pre-packaged school supply kit containing markers, crayons, pens, pencils, erasers, a spiral notebook, notebook paper, a ruler, folders and construction paper.
North Texans donated about 7,724 kits and cash worth nearly $230,000 -- a 400 percent increase in giving over last year.
The Southlake Kroger made the biggest contribution with nearly 800 kits and $8,646 in cash to buy additional kits.
The math added up to a successful start of the school year.
