A North Texas family is mourning the loss of five Chihuahua puppies. Three were shot and slashed and two are still missing.
Patricia Ponce said two days ago her daughter let their dogs out of their trailer in Wylie at 2 a.m. They usually do their business near the front of the porch and then scratch to come in, she said.
"We just let them out at 2 in the morning. Ten minutes later we called them and they never came," she said.
Once daylight arrived her daughter made a gruesome discovery. Three of the dogs were shot five or six times each, possibly with a .22 caliber or pellet gun. At least one had been stabbed.
The animals were arranged in a peculiar position, like they were staged.
"This is where we found them in a triangle," Ponce said. "It looked like someone got them and tortured them."
And two dogs are still missing.
"I feel bad. I've been crying," Ponce said. "We really miss them."
The three dogs that were found dead were named Edward, Jacob and Twilight after the popular book series. Edward weighed only 3 or 4 pounds and the other two were only 4 months old so they probably weighed no more than 2 pounds.
"That's just plain cruel, very cruel. Very, very cruel," Ponce said.
Police are investigating the case, but said it's not going to be easy to solve because no one saw or heard anything at that time in the morning and no one's complained about the dogs.
"You're dealing with animals. And who knows, at what time did this occur? The dogs were put out at 2 o'clock in the morning, so who's out at that hour?" said Sgt. Donna Valdepena with the Wiley Police Department.
The person responsible could be a danger to humans, she said.
