Mom who allegedly killed child talked of demons

DALLAS -

Dallas police charged a 25-year-old mother in the drowning death of her toddler son.

Chloe Menager is facing a capital murder charge for allegedly killing her 1-year-old boy.

According to jail records, she's accused of holding Elijahu Perez underwater in a bathtub on Thursday afternoon.

In a jailhouse interview at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center on Friday, Menager said she doesn't want people to blame her actions on her strong Jewish faith but that she was tormented by demons. However, she stopped short of saying they made her kill her child.

"It's kind of like that but I can't say it that way because it's really hard, and it's hard to explain because people are not going to want to understand," Menager said. "But I know that people that I know and people that understand all those teachings, I know they are going to understand."

Still, Menager said, she doesn't remember exactly what happened.

Visible cuts on her wrist, she said, were from an attempt to kill herself, and officials confirm she is on suicide watch.

The suspect said she misses her husband and desperately wants to hear from him.

When the boy's father saw what happened on Thursday, he ran into the street outside their apartment complex in the 4300 block of Wyoming St. and flagged down an officer.

Menager has no criminal history and is being held on $1 million bond.
