Two sexual assaults were reported within hours of each other at Georgia Gwinnett College. Officials say that one man has been arrested, while another perpetrator is still on the loose.
Police say an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted inside a dorm room early Sunday morning. The victim's mother says the 18-year-old fell asleep in a friend's room where other people had gathered.
"She was left alone asleep…That's when she said that she woke up to him violating her," said the mother.
Jennifer Stephens, with Georgia Gwinnett College, says that man, identified as Nurim Ahemd, is facing a criminal trespass charge and could face further charges depending on the investigation.
"He was a guest in housing and was not supposed to be there," Stephens said.
Stephens says another reported sexual assault occurred a few hours later, late Sunday or early Monday, in parking lot B. Campus police report a woman was pushed into her car where she was sexually assaulted.
"There was a sense that there may be a threat to students and employees on campus and so there was an alert that was sent out," said Stephens.
The perpetrator is described as a light-skinned black man with a muscular build, wearing white shorts.
Georgia Gwinnett College, which opened in August of 2006, has never had any reports of any sexual assaults until these incidents.
"We definitely are very concerned about it; we have heightened security," said Stephens.
But the mother of one of the victims says her daughter doesn't feel safe.
"I want her to continue, but I don't want her to continue there," the mother said.
The victim's mother said that her daughter will undergo some counseling to help her cope.
Officials at Georgia Gwinnett College encourage students and staff to be aware of their surroundings, to avoid walking alone and, if need be, to call campus police for an escort.
