Nationally about 5-7 million animals end up in shelters every year.
Some find forever homes, but a large number end up being euthanized. That's why animal advocates organized the mega pet adoption in Fort Worth in the 2900 block of Texas Sage Trail.
Pet Smart charities, the city of Fort Worth and 20 animal welfare organizations, collaborated on the event.
There were two huge tents set up in the Petsmart parking lot to house the dogs and cats.
Some of animals came from overcrowded shelters, others were brought in, from breed specific rescue groups.
The goal is to adopt out at least 500 animals today. The event will be held on Sunday as well and each group sets it's own price to adopt out a pet.
