Some young football players are learning a hard lesson about guarantees and dreams that don't always come true.
Kylon Gray coaches 7 and 8-year-olds on the Mansfield Falcons football team.
"I teach them the game of football, but I also team them life," he said.
It's one of four Falcons teams that play in the Metroplex Select football league operated by former Dallas Cowboy great Larry Brown.
But now Gray is crying foul.
"Our whole sophomore team was brought by me from another organization. The perk that got my kids to go that way, to want to go that way was playing at Cowboys Stadium and being on TV. That's the two reasons why my kids wanted to go there," he said.
Gray and the team's president Derrick Williams said they were promised that the league's games would be carried on FOX Sports Southwest.
The Metroplex Select website also says the Falcons would open their season at Cowboys Stadium.
"And then they changed that to our third game of the week which would have been next weekend, not tomorrow but next Saturday. And we found out yesterday that it's not going to happen period," Gray said.
Brown responded to the complaints with a statement.
"We work very hard to provide the best opportunities for the 4,000 kids we serve in the DFW area," he said. "The league does not own the networks, stadiums or the 40 venues that we utilize each Saturday and things out of our control can and will change. The only thing promised to parents is that their kids will learn to play football and get an opportunity to compete on Saturdays. Anything outside of this is extra and a best effort attempt to bring a greater experience for the kids."
Brown said the league did work hard with a representative from FOX Sports Southwest to get the youth games on television, but it didn't work out. He's hoping it will be an option for next year.
He said playing at Cowboys Stadium was always optional and depended on availability.
"Now that's something that was never told to us. It was told to us that we were guaranteed to play at the Cowboys Stadium," Gray said. "We had to break the news from 4 years to 12 years old. All ages, that's something they had been looking forward to all year and it's not going to happen."
And now the life lesson Gray has to teach his players is that promises aren't always guaranteed.
Brown will meet with the coaches and parents about the issue Friday night.
