A weekend car crash that killed two teenagers has shaken the small town of Kemp.
The accident happened at about 12:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Highway 175 and Farm to Market Road 1895 in Kaufman County.
State troopers said 17-year-old Daryl Gower pulled out in his black Ford Mustang and was struck broadside by a Range Rover whose driver simply could not stop in time.
Gower and one of his passengers, 17-year-old Joe Godina, died at the scene. Another passenger, 17-year-old John Moody was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
"It was just a terrible thing to see, somebody just go that quickly and just knowing that it could happen to any of us," said Dustin Thompson, a classmate who was one of the first people to respond to the accident.
Family and friends said Moody will likely survive, but he will have a long recovery ahead of him. He suffered two broken legs, some brain damage, jaw and pelvic injuries and had a lung collapse.
Administrators at Kemp High School said counselors and clergy members were available on Monday. Some students were also sent home because of their grief.
"It's like everybody was in shock, very emotional," one student said.
State troopers do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The driver of the Range Rover was not seriously injured.
