Police said a North Texas man was targeting pickup trucks and stealing gas. And, the way he was doing it was putting others in danger.
The suspect allegedly targeted Ford F-150 trucks parked outside the Grapevine Mills Mall, the nearby Bass Pro Shop and Baylor Medical Center in Grapevine.
Police said he drilled into their gas tanks and used a funnel fashioned from a soda bottle to empty them.
"Siphoning sure, but I've never had anybody go to this extent to remove gas from a gas tank," said Sgt. Robert Eberling with the Grapevine Police Department.
Kelly Hoffman was one of the victims. He drove to town from Conroe and got a crude surprise when he was ready to return home.
"Yeah, nice trip to the big city ain't it?" he said. "You know, I don't really know why someone would wanna drill a hole in somebody's gas tank… just for the fun of it or something I guess."
It's a dangerous way to steal gas.
"If you take an electric drill and drill into a gas tank, one little spark can ignite and you can have an explosion," said Wesley Meese, a fellow truck owner.
Police said it was an alert Grapevine officer who recognized the suspect's yellow utility truck after seeing it in surveillance video from a similar incident in Keller. He pulled him over and made the arrest.
His name has not yet been released because police are still trying to link him to similar crimes in other cities.
