Missing Garland toddler, babysitter found

Posted: Updated:
GARLAND, Texas -

Late Tuesday night, police found a 2-year-old girl who had been the subject of an Amber Alert.

Lawmen found Maliyah Vergenz with her babysitter, 38-year-old Patricia Garcia, in a motel parking lot in Terrell about 11 p.m.

Both the child and the woman were unhurt.

Garland police believe Garcia abducted the child because she recently miscarried her own baby.

The two disappeared yesterday afternoon from the 4900 block of Palo Alto Drive.

Garcia was in contact with officers earlier in the day and told them she thought she could care for the girl better than her parents.

Police thought they had convinced her to return the child, but then she stopped communicating with them.

Garcia is now in the Garland jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond. She is charged with kidnapping.

Maliyah is back home with her family.
