DALLAS (AP) - Dallas school district officials want to know if students can get their lunchtime meat while skipping the potatoes.
How? But studying the food leftover on their plates.
The Dallas Morning News reports the school board Thursday will consider allowing three elementary schools to join a Texas A&M AgriLife Research Plate Waste Collection Study. Researchers would collect, weigh and photograph food left on school lunch trays at the schools.
The $200,000 study would be funded by the nonprofit potato industry Alliance for Potato Research and Education.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture had considered requiring limiting starchy vegetables like potatoes in national school meal programs. Congress, however, blocked the requirement.
