Suspect dropped wallet at stabbing scene, police say

Posted: Updated:

Dallas police arrested a man for allegedly stabbing a Lake Highlands resident to death during a home invasion robbery this week.

The victim, 27-year-old Jamal Salaam, died after being attacked in his apartment in the 9900 block of Whitehurst Dr. Tuesday afternoon.

Thanks to a wallet found on the scene, detectives later arrested 48-year-old Gregory Autry. Police have asked the media not to release Autry's mugshot until they can perform some photo lineups.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Autry and an unnamed second suspect entered the apartment where Salaam and a friend were about 4:40 p.m.

While one suspect held the friend at gunpoint, the second stabbed Salaam multiple times while asking for money. Both victims tried to get away from the suspects by going over the apartment's second story balcony to the ground below.

However, Salaam made it only a few steps before he collapsed.

The two suspects ran in another direction, and police later found Autry's dropped wallet in that area.

Another witness told police that Autry and the other suspect, both covered in blood, went back to their apartment to shower and change clothes.
