A 39-year-old Army sergeant from North Texas was the 2,000th military casualty in Afghanistan.
The United States Department of Defense said Sgt. 1st Class Riley G. Stephens died on Friday after being hit by enemy small arms fire in the Wardak province.
Stephens was a medic. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
He graduated from Tolar High School in 1991. Tolar is southwest of Fort Worth in Hood County.
This was his fifth deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom.
He leaves behind a wife and three children.
A candlelight vigil is set for Wednesday at 7:30 in Tolar.
Funeral services are pending.
