Tonight across the country, residents in hundreds of cities will fight crime and drug use in their communities by meeting their neighbors.
Tuesday is the 29th National Night Out, a grassroots initiative involving some 15,000 communities. Typically, neighbors meet the people who live nearby, and get a chance to mingle with local law enforcement, civic groups, organizations and business owners.
Often, neighborhood associations or NNO organizers will create a barbecue or block party in the street so people don't have to travel far from their homes.
Last year, several Texas communities were named 2011 Award Winners for attendance and organization. Arlington came in 5th for cities over 300,000 people, and Plano ranked third for cities with between 100,000 and 299,000 residents.
Be sure to check with your neighbors or do an online search for your city's home page to see what events are scheduled.
