If you see a lot of pedestrians around North Texas schools today, you may be watching people participate in a worldwide event.
The International Walk To School Day first started in 1997 as a way to raise awareness for walkable communities.
The idea went global when the UK and Canada joined in the idea in 2000. Now, more than 40 countries participate.
Participation last year reached an all-time high, with more than 4,000 communities registering to get the word out.
Last spring, the first-ever Bike To School international event promoted the National Bike Month of May.
