Global effort shuts down 700 illegal drug websites

Posted: Updated:

Federal officials joined forces with authorities in about 100 other countries to seize hundreds of websites they say were selling counterfeit and illegal medicines.

According to a news release issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, its Homeland Security Investigations unit seized 686 sites in the largest operation of its kind.

According to ICE, the effort was part of the INTERPOL-led Operation Pangea V, an annual initiative aimed at disrupting organized crime networks behind the illicit online sale of fake drugs.

Worldwide, ICE said, preliminary results show Pangea has led to nearly 80 arrests and the seizure of nearly 4 million doses of potentially life-threatening counterfeit medicines worth about $10.5 million. Additionally, some 18,000 websites were taken down, it said.

Pangea V, which took place Sept. 25 to Oct. 2, conducted operations in Europe and throughout the United States. Authorities investigated websites, canceled electronic payments and intercepted packages believed to contain fake or illegal drugs, among other actions.
