Police say a homeless man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman who fell asleep on a park bench in Tompkins Square Park Friday night.
The 31-year-old woman told police she had fallen asleep around 11:30 p.m. and awoke to find 27-year-old Ruben Canales on top of her. The victim was able to fight off the Canales.
The victim then ran into Kaman Deli on Avenue A as the suspect followed her. Store workers called police and later arrested Canales who told officers he was homeless.
Police say Canales has several recent arrests on his record, including marijuana sales, criminal mischief, and criminal possession of stolen property.
