The man accused of shooting an off-duty Dallas police officer at a northeast side apartment complex is in jail, following a brief hospitalization.
The Dallas County Sheriff's office released a 2007 mugshot of 31-year-old Jason Keith Yarborough, after using his picture in photo lineups.
Investigators said Yarborough shot Sr. Cpl. Matthew Wagner twice early Tuesday morning at the Wildflower Apartments near Presbyterian Hospital.
Wagner and another officer working off-duty say they approached Yarborough as he sat in a minivan with binoculars and a police scanner. During a struggle, Yarborough fired a .40-caliber gun three times, hitting Wagner twice and a parked vehicle before running off, Deputy Chief Sherryl Scott said.
Sr. Cpl. Wagner was wounded in the upper arm and groin area. He was listed in fair condition on Wednesday and remained hospitalized, Scott said.
The suspect was arrested late Tuesday after an intensive search in several locations in Dallas County. Following the arrest, Yarborough claimed to have been shot by the officers and was briefly hospitalized.
However, Scott said neither officer fired shots and that Yarborough had only suffered a scrape.
According to a court records search, Yarborough has a long criminal history in Dallas and Ellis Counties.
Scott said the scanner and binoculars were suspicious but would not confirm if Yarborough had intended to commit a crime before being approached by the officers.
