A Department of Public Safety trooper is recovering from minor injuries after struggling with, then shooting at, a DWI suspect.
According to DPS spokesman Lonny Haschel, the trooper pulled over a Nissan Rogue about 2:30 a.m. near Northwest Highway and Hathaway Street, just east of the Dallas North Tollway.
The trooper suspected the driver, Samuel Pereira Mendoza, was drunk. When the trooper got the suspect out of the vehicle, Haschel says Mendoza started physically assaulting the trooper.
In return, the trooper tried deploying his Taser and using pepper spray on the man, but the suspect grabbed the trooper's flashlight and struck the lawman on the head, Haschel said.
Mendoza then jumped back into his Nissan and tried to drive away. The trooper drew his gun and shot out two of the tires on the fleeing vehicle, then gave chase through the neighborhood.
Mendoza's car finally stopped several blocks away, on Park Lane near Preston Road.
He's charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault on a police officer, and evading arrest.
The trooper was treated for injuries to his face at a local hospital.
