Ron Gant set to join 'Good Day Atlanta'

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

FOX 5 is welcoming a new member to our team. Ron Gant is best known as a former All-Star for the Atlanta Braves he begins a new challenge on Thursday as he joins "Good Day Atlanta."

After 16 years playing Major League Baseball, then another five years working as a baseball analyst and color commentator, Gant says the idea of transitioning to morning news was too compelling to resist.

"If I'm going to get to the point where I can be a so-called co-anchor, I think now is the time to go ahead and get into that position to where you start learning right away," said Gant.

Although he's a Texas native, Gant says he's watched with amazement and pride as Atlanta has grown from a small southern city to a booming metropolis.

"I grew up basically here in Atlanta. I was a big part of seeing this city change. I've seen the traffic change, I've seen the culture change, I've seen sports change in this city," said Gant.

Gant says being the new kid on the block kinda feels like his first day as a rookie in the league. But just like he did in baseball, once he gets the feel of the "Good Day" game, Gant hopes viewers will like what they see -- and more importantly they'll like who he is.

"I want to be more than the guy that played baseball...I want to people to know some of things I have to share with my own personal stories," said Gant.  "I'm really down to earth and I want people to know and see that side of me. That's what I think people are attracted to."

You can watch Ron on "Good Day Atlanta" beginning Thursday morning at 6 a.m. In the meantime, be sure to become friends with him on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/RonGantFOX5
