A major road from Tarrant County into Wise County remained closed Thursday morning when two rock haulers collided, killing one of the drivers.

The accident happened at 4:40 a.m. on U.S. 287, just two miles south of Rhome.

"An eastbound semi-truck w/ trailer crossed US 287 infront of southbound semi-truck trailer and clipped it;  the impact struck the fuel tank of the southbound semi-truck; the driver lost control and was ejected from his semi-truck," said Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Lonny Haschel in a news release.

The driverless truck then crossed the median and crashed into a ditch on the northbound side, catching fire.

The accident also caused a pickup truck driver to lose control and overturn. That driver was taken to the hospital with non- life-threatening injuries, Haschel said.

The other rock hauler driver was apparently not hurt.

DPS accident investigators are on scene, and all lanes in both directions are expected to remain closed for several hours.
