Three people died Thursday night when two vehicles collided head-on on a highway near the small Hunt County town of Celeste.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says 65-year-old Ouida Richards and her mother, 84-year-old Melba Compton, were headed northbound on Highway 69 in their red Ford Escape.
Coming in the opposite direction was 44-year-old Brett Vick of Greenville, driving a Chevy Impala. Around County Road 1040, the two vehicles collided about 7:40 p.m., causing a violent fiery accident.
"Evidence points to the [southbound] driver was heading from Denison to Greenville, and crossed into the northbound lane, striking the red SUV," said Cpl. J.E. Simpson.
Both drivers were killed immediately, but several people, including an off-duty paramedic who lived in the area, did their best to save the elderly woman in the SUV. However, she later died at a local hospital.
The two women were both from the town of Celeste.
