A Colleyville police officer who hit an injured two people with her patrol car right in front of police headquarters has resigned.
According to a police report, Cpl. Jennifer Chavez pulled out of the Colleyville Police Department's parking lot around 8 p.m. on Oct. 21 and then hit Oleh and Iryma Krutko, who had been crossing the street.
"She just pulls straight across and you can see where they've made the markings on the pavement from the investigation," said David Hart, the couple's attorney.
Dash-cam video from another officer's car recorded the scene. It shows Iryma on the ground with her husband and an officer close by.
She is now home recovering from her injuries.
The couple believes the officer didn't see them because she was looking down at the computer in her vehicle, the police report says.
"I believe distracted driving is the primary cause of this because obviously it wasn't that dark at that time of night yet," Hart said.
In her documented account of what happened, Cpl. Chavez wrote, "Upon observing the individuals in the roadway I attempted to apply my brakes, but was unable to stop in time."
Two days after the accident she turned in her resignation.
"The citizens of Tarrant County, I firmly believe, are going to require better conduct from a professional driver, a police officer than to hit pedestrians walking across the road like they're supposed to because she's distracted in her police unit," Hart said.
