Cops kill wild boar, report sightings of 2nd

Posted: Updated:

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — State wildlife officials are checking with the Utica Zoo and local farms after police in the city shot and killed a wild boar and reported another one was possibly on the loose.

Utica police tell local media outlets that officers killed a 200-pound pig after it became aggressive toward them Wednesday afternoon. Police later reported a second boar may be loose in the city after they received a photo of it that didn't match the one killed earlier.

The carcass was handed over to state Department of Environmental Conservation for testing of diseases.

Experts say the wild boar shot by police could have come from a population of feral pigs in central New York. Wild boars are becoming more common in upstate New York, but they're usually found in rural areas.
