Off the Chain Opinion
Far be it from me to lecture on politics. But allow me to lecture on politics.
WHITE WOMEN -- If the Republicans ever hope to regain the White House then I suggest they pay more attention to their own daughters.
Minorities voted monolithically for Obama, but they constitute just 21 percent of the entire electorate. White women, in contrast, are by far the largest voting bloc in America at nearly 40 percent. Consider that Obama's winning totals in Michigan broke down like this more or less: 40 percent of his votes came from white women, 30 percent from blacks, 20 percent white men, 10 percent other.
Women care about a range of things from education to food prices, wages to mortgage rates. But instead, every fourth year they're lectured from their waists down on the abortion thing. They're told Big Bird is a national welfare queen.
It's time to realize women are the majority: in the work force and in the classroom and increasingly as the heads of households. Want to win? Talk to them about better schools and better wages.
BIG CITY DEMOCRATS -- Don't you think it odd that a multi-billion-dollar war is being fought over a new international bridge from Canada that will land in Detroit but there is not a single political voice from city hall demanding more of a cut no matter who builds one?
Can you imagine Coleman Young or Richard Daley of Chicago sitting on their hands while outsiders decide the contours of their future? What's the long-term payout for Detroit, which is threatened with insolvency? Where are the guarantees on toll revenues or the construction of future shipyards that will bring sustained real paying jobs? This calls for big-city brass knuckles, not manicured nails.
I'm just sayin'.
