NORCROSS, Ga. -

The Gwinnett County School Resource Officer who was struck in a hit-and-run accident on Thursday is back home recovering a day after the incident.

Officer Chuck McCallum was chasing after a student involved in a lunchroom fight at Meadow Creek High School when a car struck him and kept going.

Many of the 53-year-old officer's current and former students are coming together for him. FOX 5 News spoke with several of those students. Some alumni say they have even stayed in touch with him over the years and consider him a friend.

They have set up a Facebook page, Prayers for Officer Chuck, for those who knew him.

Family members say he has some broken ribs from the incident, but is doing well.

The police say Jarvis Ruff, a student at the school, was the one behind the wheel of the car that struck Officer McCallum. They say he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a stone sign. He ran from officers before being arrested in the nearby woods. He faces numerous charges including hit and run, reckless driving and driving without a license.
