Just in time for Veterans Day, two local groups have received a $1 million grant to help homeless and other at-risk veterans.
Senator Johnny Isakson was on-hand at VFW Post #5255 in Lawrenceville along with Action Ministries and HOPE Atlanta to announce the receipt of the federal grant. It will be used by those organizations to help fund programs designed to assist veterans in Georgia who are facing imminent eviction, or who are currently homeless.
"If you can catch it early and provide shelter and leadership and guidance, you can turn a life that is otherwise spiraling down, you can turn it around," said Isakson.
In the metro Atlanta area alone, there are more than 2,000 homeless veterans. The grant will help to fund short-term intervention programs that will help to temporarily pay for rent, utilities and child care for those local veterans in 16 Georgia counties.
The aid will include guidance on navigating veterans' administration bureaucracy.
