Arlington man guilty in squatter case

Posted: Updated:
ARLINGTON, Texas -

The jury has convicted a DeSoto man of taking over an Arlington home illegally.

The jury got the case Wednesday afternoon.

David Cooper and Jasmine Williams were charged with burglary and theft.

Cooper was convicted on those charges. Williams was acquitted.

Prosecutors said they moved into a $400,000 home that was empty at the time and tried to use an obscure Texas law to squat in it and take possession of it.

The homeowner and his family were away taking care of a loved one's medical problem.

The sentencing phase of the trial begins on Thursday.

Cooper could be sentenced to anything from probation to life in prison.
