LIPA reports more headway on clearing outages

Posted: Updated:

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- The Long Island Power Authority is reporting more headway in reducing the number of power outages across Long Island and the Rockaways in New York City.

The LIPA web site said Thursday that fewer than 3,000 customers capable of receiving power are in the dark.

Most of those are considered to be isolated outages across its 1.1 million customer base.

LIPA officials have noted some of the current outages are unrelated to storm damage. Officials say they contend with small numbers of outages under ordinary circumstances.

There also are about 25,000 customers still affected along flood zone areas in the Rockaways in Queens and on Long Island's south shore.

In those cases, repairs and inspections are needed before LIPA can reconnect them.
