Atlanta man says doctors cut off wrong finger

ATLANTA -

An Atlanta man is filing suit after he says doctors cut off the finger.

Dwight Mitchell, 26, went into Grady Memorial Hospital to have part of his middle finger removed after being injured in an assault. But his attorney, Sherri Brady, says the Emory University doctor who performed the surgery cut off the wrong finger.

"Well, when he wakes up, he finds out that they amputated a portion of the wrong finger -- the finger next to the finger they should have operated on. He just describes it as being a bad dream," Brady said.

Brady says doctors went back later to perform the correct surgery, but Mitchell -- a man who always worked with his hands -- is missing two fingers on his dominant hand.

Emory spokesperson Vince Dollard said in a statement to FOX 5, "We have only just been made aware that the lawsuit has been filed and are unable to comment."

"I don't think I've seen something that careless before," Brady said.

Mitchell is seeking unspecified monetary damages in the lawsuit. His attorney says the construction worker hasn't been able to work since the surgery.
