Some already lined up for Black Friday deals

Posted: Updated:

Believe it or not, there's already a line of Black Friday shoppers outside one North Texas Best Buy store.

For Lakeisha Smith of Lancaster waiting for the doors to open on the day after Thanksgiving is as much a part of the holidays as turkeys and Christmas trees.

"It's like camping," she said. "And then you get a deal. I'm saving like $400."

Smith has been in line outside the store at Cockrell Hill and Interstate 30 since Sunday at noon. She's first in line.

"No one can argue with number one. It's the best of being number one. Everyone wants to be number one in school, number one in sports, number one at your job. That's the pleasure I'm getting out of it. Plus I'm getting a good deal," she said.

Employees have a theory about why folks are lining up earlier and earlier.

"We're really aggressive this year. Best Buy started price matching We've done a lot of things to take market share," said David Grover.

SMU COX retail expert Ed Fox said stores have to walk a fine line. Black Friday is all about excitement and it's not good to dilute it by promoting the event too early since retailers make up to half their yearly revenues in the fourth quarter.

Businesses don't' want to curtail in any way the estimated $750 the average consumer is expected to spend this holiday season.

"Consumers are gonna vote with their dollars and if there isn't a sharp beginning to the holiday buying season you're not gonna see shoppers come out in big numbers," Fox said.

But if Smith is any example, that's not likely to happen. She'll said always come out and claims she's not the crazy one.

"I laugh at them because at the end of the day I get to go home with a brand new TV and money in my pocket," she said. "They're crazy because they get to pay retail price while even though I'm out here early it's not that bad."

Retails are also hoping to add to their bottom line this year because Thanksgiving is early, which means more time for shopping before Christmas.
