Safety stressed as holiday shopping approaches

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Before you hit the stores this Thanksgiving week, a security expert wants you to put your safety first.

Shopping centers will be crawling with shoppers this holiday season and police and security experts expect thieves will also be out.

Security consultant Chuck Simmons of Norred & Associates said that shoppers will have more money and credit cards while out and about, and should take precautions.

"You got to make sure that if people are approaching you that you make eye contact and that you see them and clearly know who they are," said Simmons.

The security chef says in too many cases shoppers are not as cautious as they should be, sometimes walking and talking on their cell phones.

"If you want to gossip sit in your car and lock it up," Simmons said.

Simmons said that if you are picking up an expensive item, have someone pick you up at the curb.

"Don't take that 600 foot walk to the car through the parking lot where everybody can see you," said Simmons.

Simmons said to put expensive electronics in a generic bag. He also urged women to shop during the daytime.  Thieves are more likely to be out and try to take advantage when it's nighttime, when they think that other people may not be watching them, according to Simmons.
