Boxing champ Hector 'Macho' Camacho on life support

Posted: Updated:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- The mother of former boxing champ Hector "Macho" Camacho has arrived at a hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Camacho is clinging to life after being shot in the face yesterday.

Doctors and his family are expected to decide soon whether to remove him from life support.

The head of the hospital's trauma center says Camacho's mother spent about 20 minutes with her son today. He describes her as "devastated," and says she knows the prognosis is not good.

Doctors had said earlier that Camacho was in critical but stable condition and that he was expected to survive. But they say his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point. They are trying to determine the level of brain activity.

A longtime friend and former manager says specialists will then consult with other doctors and with Camacho's mother to discuss whether he should be removed from life support.

Camacho was outside a bar in a parked car with a friend when he was shot. The friend was killed. Police say two assailants fled in an SUV. No arrests have been made, and no motive has been disclosed.

Camacho won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s.
