A Wise County man who investigators said killed his girlfriend and led them to her makeshift grave has committed suicide, police said.
According to Chief Deputy Doug Whitehead, David Malone hung himself inside his Wise County Jail cell on Wednesday night.
Whitehead said guards were checking on Malone every 30 minutes but that he managed to hang himself using a towel.
Malone was charged with murdering 28-year-old Samantha McNorton and was being held on a $2 million bond.
On Sunday, Malone took authorities to a remote area northeast of Decatur that contained a makeshift grave assumed to be McNorton's.
Wise County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Malone, who they said was the last person seen with McNorton. She disappeared two weeks ago from Runaway Bay.
They said Malone confessed to killing McNorton.
