Passenger's arm severed in rollover DWI crash

RICHARDSON, Texas -

Police believe the driver of a car was intoxicated early Tuesday morning when he struck a shuttle van, causing it to roll off the freeway.

One passenger of two passengers in the van lost an arm in the crash.

The accident happened about 2:15 a.m. in Richardson, in the northbound lanes of Central Expressway between Spring Valley Road and Main Street.

Investigators believe 34-year-old James Dunne was speeding in his Honda before he smashed into the rear of the Yellow Check Shuttle van, causing the van to roll several times and land upright on the northbound service road.

Three people were in the van: a driver, and a married couple. The van driver and the wife are expected to recover from their bumps and bruises, but the other passenger, Kenneth Dux of Richardson, had his arm severed from the elbow down. Paramedics recovered the limb and took it and the patient to Parkland Hospital.

Police believe Dunne, who suffered a hand injury, was drunk. He's now charged with intoxication assault.

The northbound lanes of the freeway and the service road were closed for investigation, but reopened a few hours later.
