Grand Prairie homeowner shoots intruder

Posted: Updated:
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -

A 21-year-old man is hospitalized after police say he was shot in the stomach while trying to break into someone's home.

Grand Prairie police spokesman Lyle Gensler said a homeowner in the 2000 block of Clark Trail heard a window break about 2:30 p.m., then called 911.

While on the phone with the dispatcher, the homeowner said the suspect was coming at him with a knife.

The dispatcher then heard a gunshot, Gensler said, and the homeowner confirmed he fired his weapon at the suspect.

Responding police had to break down the door to get inside, and when they did, they found 21-year-old Gilberto Balderas bleeding on the floor. Next to him was a knife.

Officers handcuffed Balderas and took him to the hospital. He's expected to be charged with burglary.

The so-called "castle doctrine" allows homeowners to defend their property and themselves with deadly force if necessary. Still, the case will be referred to a grand jury.
