A local teenager who has been undergoing surgeries on his heart since he was an infant is waiting and hoping for the right match. He needs a transplant and his family needs support to help him survive.
Jared Stogryn had his first heart surgery before his first birthday. The nurses who delivered him didn't expect him to survive at all.
"What they didn't know is he's a fighter," said Michelle Stogryn, his mom.
Eighteen years later, Jared has proven the nurses wrong.
He has endured seven surgeries on his defective heart.
"There have been days I've forgotten until I'm in the bathroom and I look down. Oh, scars. Forgot," he said.
His latest surgery was performed at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Doctors implanted a device that helps his heart pump.
But it's all relative. Several years ago doctors told the family he would eventually need a transplant.
"I don't pray someone else will pass so my son will survive. I do pray his special heart comes someday," said Mike Stogryn, his dad.
There are still hurdles – medical and monetary. Jared is the second oldest of the Strogryn's five children.
His mom said she knows the month of November is covered with the help of family and friends, but she's not sure about December.
"I've learned about these things with Jared not to worry about tomorrow. My Bible tells me God takes care of it," she said.
Jared laments the things he's missed – fishing and hanging out with his friends. His wish for the future is simple.
"To be well again, to be well," he said.
Friends have set up a Facebook page for updates about the family at http://www.facebook.com/#!/JaredStogrynUpdates?fref=ts.
They've also set up an account for donations which can be made at any Omni American Bank branch in the Metroplex. The donation should be marked "Attention: Margie Dunckel benefit account for Jared Stogryn, 1204 W Henderson, Cleburne, TX 76033."
