$8.5M replenishment project starts at Monmouth Beach

MYFOXNY.COM -

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has started an $8.5 million beach replenishment project in Monmouth Beach a month after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the Jersey Shore.

The state of New Jersey received $12.9 million in a second round of federal funding on Friday as reimbursement for debris removal costs in six communities.

The Monmouth Beach project, awarded in September, was already in place when the storm struck, but officials say it's more welcome than ever to build back beaches and dunes - even if it is in one community so far.

The Army Corps began its efforts north of the Monmouth Beach and Tennis Club and will continue north toward Sea Bright and could extend into Sea Bright depending on the availability of state and federal funding.

FEMA also reimbursed the state nearly $13 million for debris removal costs in six communities across the state.
