Investigators say Powers fell approximately 40 feet just before kickoff of the ACC football championship game in Charlotte, NC.
NEW PORT RICHEY (FOX 13) -
Inside Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina Florida State and Georgia Tech battled for the Atlantic Coast Conference's collegiate football championship Saturday night.
Just before kickoff Sean Michael Powers suffered an injury that left him fighting for his life.
The 22-year-old man from New Port Richey fell approximately 40 feet from a fourth row floor ramp at the facility. He landed on a grassy area just before 8 p.m. and was apparently looking for his seat when the incident occurred.
Powers suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
Authorities in Charlotte believe at this time the fall was simply a tragic accident. It's the second tragedy to rock the Powers family this year. Back in February the young man's father died.
Soon thereafter neighbors say the family house went up for sale.
Jeremy Rivera lives in the same neighborhood as the Powers and has known the family, including Sean, for years. He is praying for a full recovery.
"I hope he pulls out of it," Rivera said. "He's a very strong-willed [young man.]"
Rivera and Sean grew up together. He says the injured Powers is an out-going guy who is very much into skate-boarding, music and his school work.
He says Sean was planning to transfer to FSU from St. Pete College. Powers was getting ready to watch the ‘Noles before he was rushed by ambulance to the hospital.
Rivera: "That's tragic, that really is. It is sad this happened because I think he had a really bright future."
