NY Marine dies in Afghanistan

An upstate Marine has died in combat in Afghanistan.

Lance Cpl. Anthony J. Denier, 26, is from Mechanicville, outside of Albany.

Denier was a rifleman conducting combat operations Sunday in Helmand province when he was hit by enemy fire.

He was airlifted to a military medical facility but was dead by the time he arrived.

Denier joined the Marine Corps in March 2011 and was promoted to his current rank in May 2012.

He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Denier had just deployed to Afghanistan at the end of October.

His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
