Mesquite police early Wednesday shot a carjacking suspect whom they said led officers on a chase.
According to investigators, 19-year-old Demarcus Shorter is one of two men who stole another man's 2009 Acura sedan and wallet at gunpoint just before 12:30 a.m. in the 3600 Block of Byrd Drive in Mesquite.
A short time later, they said, officers spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of East Meadows but the car fled. Police pursued the Acura until the 3600 block of Bahamas, where two suspects ran from the vehicle, police said.
Officers apprehended Deshon Jackson but Shorter jumped a fence into the back yard of a nearby house before stopping and "turning toward the officer quickly raising his hands from his waistband," police said.
A seven-year veteran officer pursuing Shorter feared for his life and fired three rounds from his service weapon, striking the suspect one time, police said.
No officers were injured.
Shorter was transported to Baylor Hospital in Dallas and was listed in stable condition.
A third suspect, Keith Simon, was also taken into custody. Police said Simon drove the other suspects to the scene of the carjacking.
All three men are charged with aggravated robbery and may be linked to a series of robberies, police said.
The officer has been placed on routine administrative assignment while the case is referred to a grand jury
